Port of Ijmuiden

About Ijmuiden, Guide and Tourist Attractions
(Ijmuiden, North Holland, Netherlands)

Most visitors travelling form Newcastle to Ijmuiden will be in transit to Amsterdam and other notable Dutch destinations although the small port town of Ijmuiden does offer some several worthwhile attractions and the waterfront is enticing.

What to do in Ijmuiden

Located at the mouth of the large North Sea Canal, Ijmuiden is far more than just a port town. It is home to impressive beaches and an attractive promenade.

Ijmuiden has become increasingly more popular due to the addition of the new Seaport Marina lying next to Ijmuiden beach. After you spend time on the deserted beach, a bustling promenade where tourists can shop and eat stretches the length of the marina. Yacht lovers will also enjoy the collection of boats in the marina.

Tourist Attractions

As well as the beach and promenade, Ijmuiden also boasts a number of other worthwhile attractions of which the Pieter Vermeulen Museum is about the most popular. Focusing on the environment, the Pieter Vermeulen Museum features comprehensive information on nature in the Kennermerland area and also has access to the beautiful Moerberg Gardens.

As the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is a wonderful city to explore at any time of the year, with its attractive canal houses and profusion of pedestrianised thoroughfares where bikes and trams are king. The tourist information centre is located in the centre of the city and provides tourist with invaluable information on the city and its surroundings.

Amsterdam is loaded with world class museums, including the famous Rijksmuseum, with its Rembrandt and Vermeer paintings, and the equally impressive Van Gogh Museum. Anne Frank's House and Rembrandt's House are also must-see attractions, while the nightlife is legendary. The streets are home to special coffee houses and bars, while the famous red light district features the famed windowed women, an eye-opener even if your intentions are purely innocent.
